The Toasted Odyssey Devlog 3: Chapter 0 and 1 Details

Hello Friends!

Welcome to another devlog for my new game, The Toasted Odyssey. As promised in the last devlog, I will be doing a rundown of all the major features that you will find in the game. This is planned to be a constantly evolving game, so each chapter will bring another twist or feature to the game. While I originally had planned to go over all the features for all the chapters, I figured it would be much better to just go over the features of the prologue chapter, Chapter 0 and the first chapter, titled "Awakening" because I don't want to spoil all the surprises for you all. Without further ado, let's get started!

This log will go over the main features of the first two chapters in the adventure RPG series, The Toasted Odyssey. I will now go over the major details of the prologue chapter, Chapter 0

Chapter 0

Chapter 0 is the free prologue chapter that is currently being worked on and is expected to release some time in the summer (June-August range) but if all goes well, I could probably get it out around late April or early May. There will be roughly 9 small to medium areas in the final release, but as of now, about 4 areas are complete. I have provided some screenshots of the more polished areas so far as well as the spritesheet of the main character in chapter 0. I'm not exactly the best at humanoid characters and it's just me working on this as of right now so I had to use a bit of tilesheeting and references for some of the area. However, far less of this will be used in the main chapters (with the exception of open areas and other minor exceptions) so expect a more consistent art style after chapter 0 is said and done. The non-spoilery plot of chapter 0 (which is somewhat separate for chapter 1-7, yet indirectly connected) follows as such. A struggling, Reclusive young man's simple trip to the supermarket ends sourly when he ends up needing to collect the souls of four innocent townsfolk in order to save his life. A bit simple yes (especially since I didn't want to spoil any of the more in-depth portions),  but it's very important for the story from a world-building point of view. Now let's get into the features:

  • A full fast travel feature
  • A really cool battle system will be introduced in a more simplified fashion in chapter 0.  This will be improved on in future chapters.
  • Death will be a mechanic. That's all I'll say about that. Don't want to spoil the surprise
  • There will be 2 side quests in chapter 0
  • Secrets of course
Chapter 1 "Awakening"

Chapter 1, titled "Awakening" will be following chapter 0 (obviously). However, it will not be free this time. Since it's not a demo or a prologue like the previous chapter, it will be considerably larger in scale compared to chapter 0 and will add new features as well as improve on the existing features. The concept art that's in the screenshots section of the game's page is a representation of what I expect chapter 1 to look like. Here is another non-spoilery description of the chapter 1 plot. You suddenly awaken in a field of dead grass and destruction. It looks like a war-zone. You're extremely disoriented and you have no memory of the past except for a few unimportant flashes of your childhood. The biggest surprise to you is that you were suddenly a piece of toast! Your goal will be to find the main toast city and try to piece together the mystery of this new world. As you can see, the story sounds like it has absolutely nothing to do with chapter 0, but once again, the two are separate in story but connected. The features will include the following:

  • The fast travel feature will be removed and replaced with an open, explorable world
  • Death will still be a feature, but It should be better lain out in this chapter due to some characters that I won't spoil
  • A class-system will be in the game
  • More weapons
  • More secrets (like collectibles and stuff)
  • More and better world building

It's a chapter that I'm very excited to see in action. It's a very large chapter in scale. I kind of took inspiration from a game like dark souls, where you essentially go on a pilgrimage to a better place (though that's not really how dark souls work). It's a big improvement over the simple prologue that was chapter 0. I plan to start production on it right after I finish chapter 0, but it will definitely take a longer time. Hopefully it will be worth it though.

And so that concludes today's devlog. I mean to do this on Saturday but I got caught up with a severe infection known as laziness, but here it is! I also made a twitter page for the game itself if you are interested. You can find it @Toasted Odyssey. See you next log!
